On many occasions my wife and I have been asked our method of discipleship with our children. We are firm believers that what you model, far outweighs what you say, or what you teach. We do teach our children the truths of the Bible, but we do it as we go along the way.
We love the principle of discipleship stated in Deuteronomy 6:6-8 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads
We constantly stop in the middle of life events and connect God to life. We sit and talk about the days events and connect the truths of God's Word, to the present situation. We stop and pray in the midst of adversity or trial. We regularly encourage them in transition, of how proud we are of them, when they are doing what God wants them to.
Our discipleship is all the time, and doesn't only occur at 5:00 PM or 7:00 AM, it is in constant motion as we go along the way.
We have learned that head knowledge is super but heart knowledge connected with action is superior to becoming more like Jesus. We do discipleship together with them.
That is why I love this photo above that was taken last week at Grace. This Dad came first and humbled himself, and a few seconds later his son squeezed in, and did the same. Now that is pure discipleship!
